That isn't because I'm hunting for reasons; it’s because material names, trade names, and datasheets do not always tell the same story.

What Exactly Are Celanese Products?
Celanese products are thermoplastic polymers and specialty compounds sold to manufacturers, not finished consumer items. The polymer families I see most often include PET, nylon, EVA, TPU, PPS, acetal copolymer, and polypropylene. If you are a brand owner, you likely touch Celanese indirectly: your molder or film converter buys the raw polymer, processes it, and delivers a component to you.
That distinction matters for quality. When a supplier says “it’s Celanese-grade,” I want to know the family, the grade code, and the data sheet. When a supplier says “it’s the same, just from another source,” I treat that as a change notification, not a casual revision.
How Should You Choose Among Thermoplastic Polymers Celanese Offers?
I start with use conditions, not the brochure. Will the part carry a load at temperature? Does it contact food? Does it need to survive UV, chemicals, steam, or repeated impact? Does it need to be clear? Those answers screen out entire polymer families before I ever compare prices.
Then I look for three sets of data: thermal performance, mechanical values, and environmental resistance. The thermoplastic polymers Celanese makes are not interchangeable. A PPS grade is very different from a polypropylene grade, and within one family, a glass-reinforced grade is not the same as an impact-modified grade.
For example, if you need a clear display stand, PETG plastic is a practical starting point. If you need chemical resistance at high temperatures, PPS might win. If you need an opaque, paintable part at a lower material cost, ABS is worth considering. I avoid choosing a polymer only because it was used in a similar-looking part.
What Is PETG Plastic?
PETG plastic is glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate. In short, it is PET that has been modified so it does not crystallize as easily. That makes it amorphous, and an amorphous polymer is often easier to extrude, thermoform, or injection mold into a transparent part. It is one of the first materials I evaluate when the design brief says “clear, tough, and manufacturable.”
Do not treat PETG as a single grade. There are injection-molding grades, extrusion grades, and grades formulated for film and sheet. Haze, toughness, thickness, and processing behavior can change significantly between those versions. On a datasheet I check the tensile modulus, elongation at break, and any drying requirements. I also ask whether the grade has a food-contact or medical statement if the application needs one.
PETG is often compared with ABS because both are used in housings, trays, and point-of-purchase displays. The big difference is that PETG can be transparent while ABS is opaque. PETG is also a better starting point for thermoforming. ABS has advantages in painting and bonding. The better material depends on the failure mode you are most worried about.
What Is “Salamander PET”?
Honestly, the term “salamander pet” causes confusion in polymer sourcing. I have seen it on supplier lists, and I have seen quotations that use it for a clarified PET-based product. But the name alone does not tell you whether the material is PET, PETG, a PET copolymer, or a generic sheet product. That is not a specification; that is a clue to ask for more.
When a quotation lists such a trade name, I do not approve it until I see three things: the exact polymer chemistry, the official datasheet with test methods, and a certificate of analysis for the physical lot. If the supplier says “same as PETG” but the grade code does not cross-reference to a known polymer, that is a spec gap. A quality issue at quantity costs far more than the hour spent making a verification call.
Is ABS Plastic the Right Choice for Your Application?
Search intent matters: “is abs plastic …” is an incomplete sentence until the buyer finishes it with “food safe,” “UV resistant,” or “strong enough.” Each answer depends on the specific grade and the formulation, not just the family name.
ABS stands for acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene. The butadiene phase gives impact toughness, the acrylonitrile phase adds surface hardness and some chemical resistance, and styrene improves processability. That combination makes ABS useful for housings, automotive interior parts, and many consumer products. But ABS is not automatically UV-stable, and outdoor exposure can degrade mechanical properties unless UV stabilizers are added.
So is ABS plastic better than PETG? The honest answer is: it depends on the drawing. If the part needs to be clear, choose PETG or another transparent polymer. If the part is painted, hidden from sunlight, and needs toughness at a lower cost, ABS can be a good fit. I always ask for actual test parts under the real use environment before making the final call.
Does Material Choice Affect How Customers Judge Your Brand?
Yes, and a quality manager has to care about that even when it feels unscientific. We ran a blind assessment on a hand-held tool body using two material options. One was acetal copolymer with a matte texture; the other was a lower-cost polypropylene with similar geometry. Most testers described the acetal version as more solid, even though they did not know or care which resin was used.
That is not a reason to overspecify everything. If the product is a disposable insert, a standard PP or PETG may be perfectly appropriate. But if the product carries your logo and sits in a customer’s hand, surface quality, stiffness, color consistency, and the feel of a latch or hinge become brand attributes. I count “feels cheap” as a defect, because customers will judge that long before they file a material property complaint.
How Do I Verify an Incoming Lot Is a Genuine Celanese Product?
Ask for traceability before the truck arrives. A label that says “Celanese” is not a certificate. I want a certificate of analysis linked to a lot number. If the material is resold by a distributor, I want the full chain of custody documented.
On the certificate, compare the melt flow rate or solution viscosity to the datasheet range and confirm which test standard was used, such as ASTM D1238 or ISO 1133. I also keep a sealed retained sample from every lot until the production run is complete. That practice saved us when a molding defect appeared after three weeks; we tested the retained resin and isolated the problem to the process, not the polymer.
Finally, when a supplier proposes a substitute with an unfamiliar trade name, do not accept a verbal guarantee. Require a documented cross-reference, a risk assessment, and a trial run. The name on the bag is not the specification. The verified polymer behind the name is what protects your product.
