I work in quality and brand compliance at a plastics processor. I review roughly 200 incoming polymer lots each year before they reach the production floor. In Q1 2024 I rejected three polypropylene shipments because the melt flow did not match the certificate of analysis. That may sound like a paperwork issue, but melt flow changes shrink rates, cycle times and surface appearance.

This FAQ comes from that perspective. If you are evaluating Celanese PET, trying to understand Celanese EVA performance polymers, wondering whether TPU is silicone, or checking CNC polypropylene and polypropylene pillow details, these are the questions I would ask before approving a part.

Questions I hear every month:

What is Celanese?

Celanese is an engineered materials producer with a wider portfolio than many people assume. It makes acetal copolymers, nylon-based products, PET, PPS, thermoplastic polyurethane, polypropylene compounds and EVA performance polymers, along with other specialties. The common thread is consistency. A named grade gives you a baseline to mold against and a datasheet to verify.

From a quality desk, the first thing I do with any Celanese material is confirm the full grade name and lot traceability. A substitute can look similar in pellet form but have different melt behavior, additive package or lot history. This matters even for a small trial. One 25 kilogram box should still arrive with a readable lot number and a certificate.

Another practical reason to keep a named grade: processing parameters are often built around a specific flow behavior. If the material changes, you may not notice until parts warp, short shot, or show flow lines after initial approvals. I am not saying a Celanese material is automatically better than another qualified source. I am saying the qualification process should happen before the switch, not after a molding issue appears.

What is Celanese PET?

Celanese PET is a thermoplastic polyester from the same polymer family as bottle PET, but the engineered grades are a different animal. They may be glass-reinforced, impact-modified, or nucleated for faster crystallization. Typical applications include automotive housings, electrical connectors, appliance components and other parts where stiffness, dimensional stability and chemical resistance matter.

What do I check first? Moisture. PET can hydrolyze when processed with too much absorbed moisture, and that can lower molecular weight and make parts brittle. Color may look fine and dimensions may check fine at first. Later, impact failures appear. That is why resin drying and transfer practices are part of the processing qualification, not just the material certificate.

If you are comparing PET grades, do not rely on the word PET alone. A 30 percent glass-filled grade is a different processing beast from an unreinforced one. Screw design, nozzle, gate type and mold temperature expectations all change.

What are Celanese EVA performance polymers?

EVA stands for ethylene vinyl acetate. Celanese EVA performance polymers are a family of copolymers used where flexibility, low-temperature toughness and compatibility with other polyolefins matter. Typical work includes hot-melt adhesives, flexible films, sealants, cable formulations, and foam or compound development. They are not a direct replacement for PET, nylon or acetal in structural engineering parts.

The number I look for first is vinyl acetate content. An 18 percent VA grade and a 28 percent VA grade are not interchangeable, even if the pellets look similar. Higher VA content tends to make the resin softer and more flexible, but it also changes melting behavior, stiffness and adhesion to other substrates. Ask for the exact grade, and when the datasheet lists VA content, confirm it on the certificate.

What exactly are polypropylene pillows?

The phrase polypropylene pillows is more like a shape category than a material specification. I have seen suppliers use it for protective pads, cushion inserts, nonwoven filter pillows and molded supports. Polypropylene can be converted into all of these forms, but the right grade depends on what the pillow must do.

When I get a request that says polypropylene pillow, I ask these questions: Is it a fiber form or a molded form? What density do you need? Does it have to pass a flammability test? Will the pillow contact skin, food or chemicals? Is it exposed to sunlight or heat? PP is lightweight, moisture resistant and easy to process, but homopolymer PP, impact copolymer PP and filled PP grades behave differently.

Ask for the exact test standard before production. Polypropylene alone does not guarantee a colorant, UV stabilizer or flame retardant package. The polymer name is a starting point, not a finished specification.

Can you CNC polypropylene?

Yes. CNC polypropylene is a practical option when the process is set up for the material, but it is not a copy and paste job from metal. PP has a high coefficient of thermal expansion and low softening point. A dull or aggressive tool can push the material past melting, leaving stringy chips and a fuzzy edge. Sharp tooling with positive geometry, light finishing cuts and coolant makes a visible difference.

Polypropylene can also deform under clamp pressure. For thin parts, consider vacuum fixturing or soft jaws instead of a steel vise squeezing the full width of the part. And if you have time, rough the part, let it cool, then take a fine finishing pass. That helps lock in dimensions.

I learned this the hard way on a thin-walled bracket. The feed and speed chart looked fine on paper, but my gut said the unsupported wall was too fragile. We tried to make up time with an aggressive pass. The first part bowed enough to scrap, and the redo cost more time than a conservative second pass. Trust me on this one.

Is TPU silicone?

Short answer: no. TPU is thermoplastic polyurethane. Silicone is a different family, usually a thermosetting elastomer with a silicon-oxygen backbone. TPU can be melted, processed, reground and remelted in injection molding and extrusion equipment. Silicone normally cures and cannot be reprocessed that way.

On the performance side, TPU is usually chosen for abrasion resistance, tear strength and toughness. Silicone is often chosen for temperature range, softness and low-temperature flexibility. There is overlap in soft-touch parts, but the chemistry, molding process and failure modes are different.

Comparing them by hardness alone can fool you. Two materials can both read 70 Shore A and still have different compression set, tear strength and heat resistance. Many TPU grades are also moisture sensitive and need drying before molding, which is not part of standard silicone liquid injection molding. If someone calls a TPU product silicone, ask for evidence. An FTIR spectrum can separate the materials quickly, and a claim such as silicone-free should have documentation behind it.

Per FTC guidance, health-related or material claims must be substantiated before they appear in marketing. That principle also works for internal quality: do not write the claim into a spec unless you can prove it.

Will a smaller manufacturer get useful service?

This is the question people often ask after they read Celanese PET or Celanese EVA performance polymers and assume the supplier expects seven truckloads. Small runs and trial quantities are a normal part of product development. I have ordered samples through material distributors and received useful technical input on drying, machining and testing before placing a production order.

What matters more than quantity is how a supplier treats a specification question. If they ask about your application, dimensional requirements or test standard, that is a good signal. If they tell you that your quantity is too small to deserve an answer, that is also useful information, about them. A vendor who dismisses a 10 kilogram trial is not likely to become more helpful when a problem appears on a larger order.

Some suppliers are set up for full truckloads only, but many have distributors who can handle smaller quantities. Small customers still have the right to know exactly what they are buying. Small today can become a serious production order tomorrow, and the suppliers who answer technical questions for a sample order earn the next call.
